Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain's ventricles, leading to increased pressure on the brain. This can occur due to an imbalance in the production and absorption of CSF, blockage of its normal flow, or other factors. Hydrocephalus can result in symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, cognitive impairment, and gait disturbances. It can affect individuals of all ages, from infants to older adults. Treatment typically involves surgical intervention to either remove the obstruction blocking CSF flow or to implant a shunt system to redirect and drain excess fluid away from the brain, alleviating pressure and managing symptoms. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are essential to prevent complications and optimize outcomes for individuals with hydrocephalus.
